We are fascinated by social use of public space and play behaviors of people of all ages. We use a variety of observation techniques, from direct visual observation via the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC), to videography, to drones, to sensors, and onsite antennae.

As certified playground safety inspectors, we can assess existing play environments for compliance with ADA and US Access Board (Summary of Accessibility Guidelines for Play Areas) guidelines, as well as ASTM F1487 (Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use) and CPSC #325 (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Public Playground Safety Handbook)

We also assess environmental factors, such as decibel levels, temperatures of surfaces and structures, species counts, habitat conditions, and air quality. Our findings are shared publicly via our project assessment reports to help improve the design of playgrounds and public spaces for all.
